Tesla Motors puts the common idea that electric cars lack power and juice to shame. Their cars are stylish, futuristic, sleek, luxurious, and of course, expensive (for most people anyway).

How expensive you ask? Well that depends on the the model you get. Tesla's Model S has a base price of $57,000. With the federal tax credit applied, the cost changes to $49,000. The company's very first electric car, the Tesla Roadster, has a base price of $109,000. If either of these are way out of your price range, then you may be happy to hear that Tesla Motors plans on releasing another electric car (shh... it's top secret! It's codename is BlueStar. I'm sensing a pattern here, as the Model S was codenamed WhiteStar) with a $30,000 price tag.
Now lets get to some of the details, starting with the Model S. The Model S is a high performance full-sized sedan that will hopefully begin production halfway through 2012. On a single charge, the Model S can travel up to 160 miles (or 260 km for those of you that use the more intelligent metric system). For an even further range, the Signature Series Model S has a range of 230 or 300 miles (370 or 480 km), depending on the battery pack that is installed. Acceleration from 0-60 mph (0-97 kph) can be done in 5.6 seconds. Charging can take anywhere from 3-5 hours. Using a 450 volt outlet, however, charging can be done in 45 minutes.

The Tesla Roadster was a landmark electric vehicle, as it was the first all-electric mass produced highway-capable vehicle to be sold in the United States. The standard model can accelerate 0-60 mph (0-97 kph) in 3.9 seconds. This car performs as well as it looks, and it looks sweet. If you ever have wondered how much it would cost to fuel (electrically fuel it, that is) a Tesla Roadster, the EPA posted the Roadster 2.5 would have an annual fuel cost of $540. Not too shabby if you ask me. That's just $45 a month. The range of the Roadster is around 220 miles (350 km).
What does the future hold for Tesla Motors? The word is that Tesla Motors will be making a move towards making more practical, everyday cars. This is good news for all of us who have been waiting for more electric vehicle choices, but ones that are more in our price range. The Tesla Roadster is quite a sweet looking EV, but as far as affordability goes, it is well out of reach for most people.
