Diesel Hybrid Cars
Almost every car maker has either developed a hybrid car or has announced their plans to do so. The cost of fuel has made this a necessity because they are required to keep their mpg to 27. 5 in any new product line. The hybrid has a larger engine and is therefore not only getting great mpg but is faster.
Blending the diesel car with the hybrid car is a marriage made in heaven. This is the biggest concept that has come alone in years and is spreading rapidly. The oil supply is not a resource that will be there forever. What will our grandchildren do when the oil supply runs out? Using less gasoline is the greatest option possible.
Developing the environmentally-friendly Diesel-Hybrid-Electrics is just an obvious direction for the future. Putting the hybrid-electric systems together with the modern clean diesel engines will dramatically reduce the depletion of oil, contribute to cleaner air and of course get outstanding mileage. The big, powerful SUV could get over 80 MPG besides being carbon-neutral.
The new diesel-electric hybrid cars are now produced by GM, Chrysler and Ford to name a few. Blending the efficiency of the technologies of the hybrid with the power of the diesel engines is bound for greatness. A specific study was done by MIT's Laboratory for Energy and the Environment that analyzed the fuel production, eventual disposal and use of the hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. Diesel hybrid emerged as the better choice for vehicles over the gasoline engines.
The MIT report was founded on diesel fuel that is petroleum-based. Actually, the modern diesel engines are biodiesel using a fuel that is petroleum free. This is a completely synthetic fuel created from plants. In Europe canola/rapeseed is used and in the US it is soy. Of course, these are then carbon-neutral.
The technology for the diesel hybrid car is presently used in the bigger vehicles. The diesel engine provides the speed and power to the vehicle while the hybrid system drastically decreases the fuel used by depending on the electric motor during the acceleration and idling caused by heavy traffic, the stop-and-go of today's rush-hour journey.
An example of the diesel hybrid car is the sedan developed by GM called the 'Opel Astra Diesel Hybrid' that uses two electric motors and increases fuel consumption by almost 59 MPG. DaimlerChrysler has the '100 Dodge Ram hybrid electric vehicle diesel pickup', Mercedes-Benz has the 'ML320 BlueTec', and Volkswagen has the 'Audi Q7 3. 0 TDI' to name a few examples.
The major car manufacturers are adopting the diesel hybrid car concept because besides the major advantage of conserving fuel, the electric motor joined with the diesel engine will be their answered prayers for meeting the emissions standards that are growing harsher with each passing year.
